Finding the best airline credit card starts with how we travel. For Indian travellers, the right choice depends on our preferred airlines, yearly spending and how easily we can use the rewards. A large welcome bonus means little if we cannot find a suitable flight to redeem it on.
We compare four travel cards below, then explain the costs and conditions we would check before applying. Our focus is usable value, whether we book regular work trips or save for an annual holiday.
Airline Miles or Flexible Travel Rewards?
We would separate the options into two groups. A co-branded airline card connects its benefits to a particular airline programme. It may suit us when we repeatedly fly that airline on routes we actually need.
A flexible travel card lets us earn the bank’s reward currency and use supported travel redemption options. This gives us more choice, but transfer ratios, partner lists and award-seat availability still matter. One Reward Point does not automatically equal one rupee or one airline mile.
Four Cards We Would Compare for Flight Rewards
These are options for different spending patterns, rather than a ranked list. Annual fees below exclude applicable taxes. Joining fees, reward exclusions and redemption conditions need a separate check.
Axis Bank ATLAS: For Direct Airline and Hotel Bookings
Annual fee: ₹5,000 plus GST.
We would shortlist ATLAS if we often book flights directly with airlines or pay hotels directly. It earns 5 EDGE Miles per ₹100 on eligible direct airline, direct hotel and Travel EDGE bookings, subject to the card’s conditions. Other eligible spends earn 2 EDGE Miles per ₹100.
That makes the booking channel important. A family holiday booked through a different travel website may not earn the same accelerated rate. We would also check transfer-partner caps before building a large miles balance.
HSBC TravelOne: For Travel-Platform Bookings
Annual fee: ₹4,999 before applicable taxes.
TravelOne is worth comparing when we book through travel aggregators as well as airlines. It earns 4 Reward Points per ₹100 on eligible flights, travel-aggregator bookings and foreign-currency spending. Other eligible purchases earn 2 Reward Points per ₹100.
For a work trip booked through a travel platform, this wider earning category may be useful. HSBC advertises 1:1 conversion to air miles in its app. We would confirm the chosen airline partner’s terms and remember that earning more points abroad does not remove foreign-currency charges.
HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal: For Higher Spending and Travel Redemptions
Joining and renewal fee: ₹10,000 plus applicable taxes.
We would compare this card when our normal spending can justify a higher fee. HDFC allows Reward Points redemption towards SmartBuy flight and hotel bookings at ₹1 per Reward Point, with points covering up to 70% of the booking value under its terms.
For a family flight booking, that means we still need to budget for the cash portion. The card also offers airport lounge access, subject to programme conditions. We would check merchant acceptance for our everyday shopping before relying on it as our main card.
SBI Card MILES: For a Lower Annual Fee
Joining and annual fee: ₹1,499 plus applicable taxes.
The base MILES variant offers a lower fee than the other cards here. It earns 2 Travel Credits per ₹200 on eligible travel spending. Travel Credits can be used through supported redemption routes, including conversion to partner air miles or hotel points.
We would consider it for occasional flight and hotel bookings when we want to explore travel rewards without a premium annual fee. We would calculate what our expected spending earns after conversion, rather than assuming the cheaper fee guarantees better overall value.
How We Work Out Whether a Card Earns its Place
Start with costs we will actually pay
We add the annual fee, taxes and likely redemption charges. For overseas trips, we check the foreign-currency markup too. A renewal-fee waiver only helps when our planned eligible spending meets its conditions without extra purchases.
Check our route before collecting miles
We look for partners serving our destination and check award-seat availability. A generous transfer ratio is less useful if the flights we need are unavailable. We would avoid transferring points speculatively because reversing a transfer may not be possible.
Count benefits we can use
We value lounge visits only when the participating airports and access conditions fit our trips. We also check guest charges. Hotel vouchers and milestone bonuses should count only if we would use them without changing our budget.
Keep everyday payments in the picture
Travel is only part of our spending. Groceries, food delivery and local merchant payments may deserve a separate comparison. For eligible merchant QR payments, we can explore how a RuPay credit card on UPI works through Kiwi. UPI acceptance and rewards depend on the transaction and card terms.
Habits that Protect the Value of our Rewards
We would pay the full statement balance by the due date. Interest charges can outweigh the value of miles or cashback. We would also avoid spending more simply to reach a milestone.
Before redeeming, we compare the cash fare with the points required and any taxes or charges payable separately. This helps us see whether a redemption saves money on a trip we already planned.
Make Our Next Flight Part of the Kiwi Plan
Our next trip deserves the same clear comparison as our everyday payments. With Kiwi, eligible users can book flights in the Kiwi app using their linked credit card issued by a partner bank through Kiwi.
We can start by checking the fare and any available cashback offer in the app. Qualifying bookings must begin and finish there and use the eligible linked card. Payments with another card or payment method do not qualify for the flight cashback described in the terms.
Open Kiwi, check the flight-booking option and compare the final fare for your next trip. Before paying, we would read the flight-booking terms and general terms. Offer eligibility, exclusions and cancellation-related cashback reversals apply.
FAQs
Which is the Best Airline Credit Card if We use Different Airlines?
We would compare flexible travel cards first. The useful choice depends on supported partners, transfer limits and available flights, rather than the number of airline logos advertised.
Are Airline Miles the Same as Cashback?
No. We use miles through a loyalty programme under its redemption rules. Cashback follows the relevant card or offer terms. Kiwi’s cashback should not be treated as transferable airline miles.
Can Miles Pay for an Entire Flight?
We should not assume so. Award bookings can still require taxes, surcharges or fees. Bank travel portals may also limit the portion of a booking payable with points.
Do Our Airline Miles Expire?
Expiry rules vary by programme. We would check both the bank’s points validity and the airline’s miles policy before transferring. Account activity does not extend validity in every programme.
Is a Travel Card Worthwhile if We Fly Occasionally?
We would compare the yearly cost with savings we can realistically use. An existing card or lower-fee option may make more sense when we take only one or two trips.
Can We use any Credit Card for Kiwi’s Flight Cashback?
No. The published terms require an eligible linked card issued through Kiwi. We would confirm the current in-app offer before booking and check whether separately processed add-ons qualify.
