A Simple Guide to Setting and Using It"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What is MPIN number? If you\u2019re new to mobile banking in India, we\u2019ll help you make sense of it. MPIN stands for Mobile Banking Personal Identification Number. It is a private numeric code used to log in to a bank\u2019s app or approve transactions, depending on the bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name can look similar to other payment PINs. We\u2019ll walk through what each code does, how to set an MPIN and what to do if you forget it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where We Use an MPIN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An MPIN helps a bank check that the person accessing its mobile service is authorised. Its length and purpose depend on the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Kotak\u2019s new banking app uses a six-digit MPIN for login. AU 0101 uses a four-digit MPIN for login. In Canara Bank\u2019s app, the login passcode is separate from the six-digit MPIN used for transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means we need to read the label on the screen before entering a code. An MPIN may open the app in one bank and confirm a fund transfer in another. It is not a single code that works across every banking app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How We Tell an MPIN Apart From Other PINs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We can avoid much of the confusion by looking at what each code is for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MPIN:<\/strong> Used within mobile banking for login or transaction approval, as defined by the bank.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UPI PIN:<\/strong> Used to authorise UPI payments and certain account actions. NPCI\u2019s UPI FAQs distinguish it from a bank-issued MPIN.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ATM or card PIN:<\/strong> Used for card-based actions, such as withdrawing cash at an ATM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>OTP:<\/strong> A one-time password used for a particular verification step. It is not the MPIN we choose and use again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How We Can Set Up an MPIN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact steps vary by bank, but we can use this checklist to prepare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Open the official banking app.<\/strong> Use the app linked from the bank\u2019s website and begin registration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verify the registered mobile number.<\/strong> Follow the app\u2019s SIM or OTP verification instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complete the identity check.<\/strong> The bank may ask for customer details, card information or internet-banking credentials within its official setup flow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Choose the MPIN.<\/strong> Enter a code with the number of digits the app requires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confirm the code.<\/strong> Re-enter it and wait for the app to confirm that setup is complete.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Some banks ask us to create the MPIN during registration. Others prompt us when we first use a transaction service. For instance, IOB\u2019s mobile-banking FAQ describes a transaction MPIN created during activation using debit-card details or Aadhaar OTP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend checking the bank\u2019s instructions before trying another route. Net banking, branch assistance or other setup options are bank-specific. There is no single ATM or USSD process we can recommend for every account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before starting, we also check that the registered SIM is in the phone and can send an SMS. Canara\u2019s registration instructions require an outgoing verification message and sufficient SMS balance. On a dual-SIM phone, choosing the number registered with the bank matters. If that number has changed, we contact the bank to update its records before attempting registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How We Reset or Change an MPIN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If we forget an MPIN, we can create a new one through the bank\u2019s reset process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can usually start with <strong>Forgot MPIN<\/strong> on the banking app\u2019s login screen or its relevant PIN screen. Then we complete the bank\u2019s identity check, create a new code and confirm it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The verification method varies. AU 0101\u2019s guidance lists options using its username and password, debit-card details or credit-card details. We should use only the options our own bank displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we remember the current MPIN and simply want to replace it, we can look for <strong>Change MPIN<\/strong> in the app\u2019s settings or security section. This may ask for the existing code before accepting a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If verification fails, we recommend using support details on the bank\u2019s official website. A reset should stay within the bank\u2019s approved process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Habits We Recommend for Keeping an MPIN Private<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A PIN works best when we treat it as confidential. A few practical habits help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose a code that is hard to guess. Avoid birthdays, repeated digits and simple sequences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use different codes for different purposes wherever the app allows it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the PIN out of messages, screenshots and unprotected phone notes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never disclose it to a caller or someone claiming to provide support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the phone locked and avoid sharing the screen while using banking apps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If we think someone has seen the code, we should change it promptly.
