It is a delegated UPI payment feature for Indian UPI users who want to let a trusted person make payments from their UPI-linked bank account, within controls set by the account holder.

In simple words, one person keeps control of the bank account and another person gets permission to use it for UPI payments. The account holder is called the primary user. The trusted person is called the secondary user.

This can be useful when a parent wants to give a child controlled payment access, when a senior family member needs help with digital payments, or when a caregiver has to buy medicines or groceries without handling cash.

UPI Circle does not mean that the secondary user owns the bank account. It also does not mean open access. The primary user can choose the type of access, set spending limits, view transactions, and remove access when needed.

UPI Circle is now available through supported UPI apps, although the exact feature name, setup process, eligibility, and availability can vary by app. For example, Google Pay offers UPI Circle through its Pocket Money feature, while PhonePe and BHIM also provide UPI Circle functionality. Paytm has also published guidance on UPI Circle and its full and partial delegation models.

Why was UPI Circle introduced?

UPI is widely used across India, but not every person who needs to make a payment has easy access to their own bank account or is comfortable managing payments alone.

UPI Circle helps solve this gap. It lets more people participate in digital payments without forcing every user to manage a separate account immediately.

The main benefit is controlled independence. A student can pay for meals or stationery, a senior parent can pay at a pharmacy, or a caregiver can buy groceries while the primary user keeps visibility.

This use case is particularly relevant across popular UPI apps such as GPay, Paytm, PhonePe and BHIM UPI, where users may have different feature availability depending on the app, bank and account eligibility.

Who are the primary and secondary users?

The primary user is the person whose bank account is linked to UPI and who gives permission. This person controls who gets added, what type of access they receive, how much they can spend, and when access should end.

The secondary user is the trusted person who receives permission. This person can initiate payments based on the access given by the primary user. Depending on the delegation type, the secondary user may either complete payments within a limit or send each payment to the primary user for approval.

For example, a parent using GPay, Paytm or BHIM UPI can potentially act as the primary user and give controlled payment access to a child or another trusted family member, subject to the app’s supported UPI Circle flow.

UPI Circle should be used for known people, clear spending needs, and defined limits.

How does UPI Circle work?

The exact app flow can vary across UPI apps, but the broad journey is simple.

Whether you use GPay, Paytm, BHIM UPI, PhonePe or another supported UPI app, look for the UPI Circle option in the app’s profile, UPI or payment settings. The exact menu name and setup journey may differ.

The primary user opens a UPI app that supports UPI Circle.

The primary user chooses the UPI Circle option.

The secondary user is added through a UPI ID, QR code, or supported app flow.

The primary user selects the type of delegation.

The primary user sets limits and confirms the setup.

The secondary user accepts the invitation.

The secondary user starts making payments based on the access granted.

For a full-delegation setup, the secondary user may be able to complete eligible payments within the approved limits. For a partial-delegation setup, the primary user has to approve the payment before it goes through.

Types of UPI Circle delegation

UPI Circle generally works through two delegation models: full delegation and partial delegation.

Full delegation

Full delegation gives the secondary user more independence. The primary user sets a spending limit, and the secondary user can make payments within that limit without asking for approval each time.

This can work well for frequent, low-value payments where repeated approval would be inconvenient. Since every payment may not need fresh approval, the primary user should set a limit that matches the purpose and review transactions regularly.

Partial delegation

Partial delegation gives the primary user tighter control. The secondary user can start a payment, but the primary user must approve it before the money is debited.

This can work well when the secondary user needs help completing payments but the account holder wants to check each transaction. It is slower than full delegation, but it gives more control over every payment.

UPI Circle limits

UPI Circle limits are designed to keep delegated access controlled.

A primary user can add up to five secondary users. A secondary user can be linked to only one primary user at a time.

For full delegation, the monthly limit for a secondary user can be up to `₹15,000`. The per-transaction limit can be up to `₹5,000`. The primary user can set a lower limit based on the need.

For partial delegation, existing UPI limits may apply because the primary user approves each payment. Apps may also apply their own risk checks, bank-side rules, cooling-period limits, or account-level restrictions.

For example, Google Pay currently states that a primary user can add up to five secondary users and set a monthly full-delegation limit of up to ₹15,000. The exact limits and controls shown in GPay, Paytm, BHIM UPI, PhonePe or another supported app may differ based on the app, bank and applicable UPI rules.

The per-transaction limit of up to ₹5,000 should therefore be treated as the applicable UPI Circle ceiling where supported, rather than a guarantee that every app will display or permit the same amount for every user.

Newly linked users may face a lower transaction cap during the first 24 hours. This cooling period is meant to reduce risk after a fresh setup.

The exact cooling period can vary by app and implementation. For example, Google Pay currently states that there is a 30-minute cool-off period before a newly added secondary user can start making UPI Circle payments.

Because UPI rules and app flows can change, users should always check the latest limit shown inside their UPI app before relying on a specific amount.

Requirements to use UPI Circle

The exact requirements may depend on your UPI app and bank, but these are the usual expectations:

The primary user should have an active UPI-linked bank account.

The UPI app should support UPI Circle.

The secondary user should have access to a compatible UPI app flow.

The primary user may need the secondary user’s UPI ID, QR code, and mobile number.

The secondary user’s number may need to be saved in the primary user’s contact list.

Both users may need app-level authentication, such as an app passcode or biometric lock.

UPI Circle may not be available for every bank, every UPI app, or every user at the same time. If you cannot see it in your app, check whether your bank and app currently support the feature.

Why is UPI Circle not showing on my app?

If UPI Circle is not showing on your app, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your UPI account. The feature may not be enabled for your particular app, bank account, user profile, or current app version.

UPI Circle is available through supported apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe and BHIM, while Paytm also provides information about the feature. However, availability and the exact setup experience can vary by app, bank, account eligibility and rollout. Google Pay, for example, currently notes that access to UPI Circle can be limited for some users as the feature is made available more broadly.

If you cannot find UPI Circle in GPay, Paytm, BHIM UPI, PhonePe or another UPI app, try the following:

Update the app to its latest version.

Check the profile, UPI or payment settings for a UPI Circle option.

Make sure your bank account is active and linked to the UPI app.

Check that your registered mobile number matches the number associated with your bank account and UPI setup.

Make sure the secondary user’s details meet the app’s requirements.

Check whether your bank and the specific app currently support UPI Circle.

If the feature is still unavailable, check the app’s latest help or support information.

On Google Pay, UPI Circle can be found through the Profile section under the Pocket Money/UPI Circle option. On BHIM, users can look for the UPI Circle feature within the app’s supported payment functionality. The exact navigation on Paytm and other apps may differ.

Benefits of UPI Circle

UPI Circle is useful because it brings digital payments closer to how Indian families already manage money.

Reduces dependence on cash

Many delegated payments still happen through cash. A parent gives cash to a child. A family member leaves cash at home for daily purchases. A caregiver carries cash for errands.

UPI Circle makes this more trackable. The payment can happen digitally, and the primary user can see the transaction trail.

Supports dependents without separate accounts

Some people need payment access before they are ready to manage their own bank account independently. This includes students, elderly users, and people who are not comfortable with full digital banking.

UPI Circle gives them a way to make necessary payments with oversight.

Gives the primary user control

The primary user can set limits, choose full or partial delegation, and remove access. This makes UPI Circle more controlled than handing over cash or sharing sensitive account details.

Improves visibility

With cash, it is easy to forget where the money went. With UPI Circle, the primary user can see payment activity. This can help families and small teams manage daily spends more clearly.

Makes everyday errands easier

UPI Circle can help with groceries, medicines, school supplies, household needs, and other everyday merchant payments. The best use cases are small, routine, and trust-based.

UPI Circle vs normal UPI

Normal UPI is usually used by the account holder. You link your own bank account, authenticate with your own UPI PIN, and pay from your own account.

UPI Circle adds another layer. It allows a secondary user to initiate payments from the primary user’s account, based on permission from the primary user.

The difference is delegation. Normal UPI is individual account use. UPI Circle is controlled account access for a trusted person.

UPI Circle vs UPI Lite and UPI AutoPay

UPI Lite is meant for quick, low-value payments by the user themselves. UPI AutoPay is meant for recurring mandates such as subscriptions or bills. UPI Circle is different from both because it is about delegation: a trusted secondary user can make or initiate payments from the primary user’s account under defined controls.

For example, a GPay, Paytm or BHIM UPI user might use UPI Lite for their own small-value payments, UPI AutoPay for recurring mandates, and UPI Circle when they want to delegate controlled payment access to another person.

UPI Circle vs RuPay credit card on UPI

UPI Circle and RuPay credit card on UPI solve different problems.

UPI Circle helps a bank-account holder delegate UPI payment access to a trusted person.

RuPay credit card on UPI helps eligible users make merchant payments through UPI using a linked RuPay credit card instead of paying directly from a savings account.

For example, Kiwi focuses on UPI on credit. Eligible users can apply through Kiwi, link supported RuPay credit cards to UPI, scan merchant QR codes, track spends in the app, and earn applicable cashback or rewards on eligible transactions.

So the choice depends on your need. If you want to give payment access to a trusted person, UPI Circle is relevant. If you want to pay merchants via UPI using credit, RuPay credit card on UPI through Kiwi may be more relevant.

Is UPI Circle safe?

UPI Circle is designed with controls, but safety depends on how carefully you use it.

Follow these checks:

Add only people you know and trust.

Start with a small limit.

Use partial delegation if you want to approve each payment.

Review transactions regularly.

Remove access when the need ends.

Keep your UPI app locked with a passcode or biometric lock.

Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, card details, or app login credentials.

Check the merchant name and amount before approving a payment.

UPI Circle should never require you to share your UPI PIN with the secondary user. If anyone asks for your PIN, treat it as a warning sign.

Common mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is adding someone casually. UPI Circle should be used only for trusted people and clear payment needs.

The second mistake is setting a high limit when a lower one would work. If the use case is groceries or medicines, set a realistic limit and increase it only if needed.

The third mistake is forgetting to remove access. If a student returns home or a temporary caregiver no longer needs payment access, remove them from your UPI Circle.

The fourth mistake is confusing UPI Circle with joint account ownership. The secondary user does not become an account owner. They only get delegated payment access.

The fifth mistake is assuming it works on every app and bank. Availability depends on app and bank support.

When should you use UPI Circle?

Use UPI Circle when all three things are true:

You trust the person.

They need payment access for a clear reason.

You are comfortable with the limit and approval model.

It is a good fit for family support, student expenses, elder-care payments, and household errands. For business use, check app, bank, merchant-category, tax, and accounting requirements first.

It may not be the right fit when you do not fully trust the person, when the payment purpose is unclear, or when expenses are high-value.

A smarter way to think about UPI payments

UPI Circle is part of a larger shift in Indian payments. UPI is no longer only a way to send money from one bank account to another. It is becoming a broader payment layer with features for delegation, small-value payments, recurring mandates, credit-linked payments, and app-based control.

That is where choosing the right UPI tool matters.

If you want to delegate payment access, UPI Circle can help. If you want to use credit for everyday merchant payments, Kiwi can help eligible users apply for a RuPay credit card on UPI, scan and pay at merchants, track spends, manage repayments, and earn applicable cashback on eligible transactions.

You bring the payment needs, Kiwi helps make everyday UPI on credit easier to manage.

FAQs on UPI Circle

What is UPI Circle in simple words?

UPI Circle is a UPI feature that lets a primary user give a trusted secondary user permission to make payments from the primary user’s UPI-linked bank account, within limits and controls.

Who are primary and secondary users in UPI Circle?

The primary user is the account holder who gives permission. The secondary user is the trusted person who receives controlled payment access.

What is the difference between full and partial delegation?

Full delegation lets the secondary user pay within the approved limit. Partial delegation requires the primary user to approve each payment.

What is the UPI Circle transaction limit?

For full delegation, the monthly limit can be up to `₹15,000`, with a per-transaction limit of up to `₹5,000`. App, bank, cooling-period, and UPI rules may also apply.

How many people can be added to UPI Circle?

A primary user can add up to five secondary users. A secondary user can be linked to only one primary user at a time.

Do I need to share my UPI PIN for UPI Circle?

No. You should never share your UPI PIN. UPI Circle is a controlled delegation feature inside supported UPI apps.

Can UPI Circle be used for business payments?

It may help with some small, trust-based merchant errands, but it should not be treated as a full business expense system. Check your app, bank, merchant-category, tax, and accounting requirements before using it.

How is Kiwi related to UPI Circle?

Kiwi and UPI Circle solve different UPI needs. UPI Circle is for delegated payments. Kiwi helps eligible users pay merchants via UPI using credit through supported RuPay credit cards, with app-based spend tracking and applicable rewards on eligible transactions.

Disclaimer: The information provided in this article is for general informational and educational purposes only.
