Over the last few years, a big shift has taken place \u2014 RuPay, the homegrown card network, is rapidly becoming one of the most used credit card networks in the country. What\u2019s driving this change? And why are RuPay credit cards suddenly capturing so much market share? Let\u2019s unpack the story with the latest data and trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Government-Led Vision<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>RuPay was conceived not as just another card brand, but as part of India\u2019s strategic vision to build a <strong>self-reliant payment ecosystem<\/strong>. Launched in 2012 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under RBI\u2019s guidance, RuPay was meant to reduce dependency on global networks like Visa and Mastercard and make digital payments more accessible for all Indians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A crucial milestone came in <strong>June 2022<\/strong>, when RBI allowed RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI. This simple regulatory change was a game-changer \u2014 suddenly, credit cards could be used like UPI for QR scanning, exactly how people were already paying digitally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UPI Integration: The Real Growth Engine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before UPI integration, credit cards had limited reach \u2014 largely confined to POS machines in stores, or online payments. Consumers rarely used them for everyday small spends because the process was slower and less convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UPI changed that. By enabling RuPay credit cards to be linked and used right within the UPI scan-and-pay flow, NPCI unlocked a huge behavioural shift. Users didn\u2019t have to switch apps or change how they paid. They just chose credit instead of debit or bank balance \u2014 but still within the familiar UPI interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within just a couple of years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UPI-linked <a href=\"https:\/\/gokiwi.in\/rupay-credit-card\/\">RuPay credit card<\/a> transactions doubled<\/strong>, moving from about 362.9 million in FY24 to around 750 million in FY25.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These payments were valued at nearly <strong>\u20b963,826 crore (~US$7.3B)<\/strong> by October FY25.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today, nearly <strong>40% of all credit card payments by volume are routed over UPI<\/strong>, a dramatic shift from about 10% just a year earlier.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This growth reflects more than convenience \u2014 it reflects <strong>usage behaviour shifting toward daily, small-ticket credit usage<\/strong>, just like UPI has normalised digital payments. UPI isn\u2019t just a payment rail anymore \u2014 it\u2019s the preferred way most Indians pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lower Cost &amp; Better Acceptance for Merchants<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another big reason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rupay.co.in\/\">RuPay<\/a> is gaining ground is cost dynamics for small merchants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With UPI, many RuPay credit card transactions under \u20b92,000 <strong>don\u2019t attract a merchant discount rate (MDR)<\/strong> \u2014 a fee merchants typically pay on card transactions. This makes accepting credit via UPI much cheaper and attractive for neighbourhood shops and kiranas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare that with traditional credit card swipes, where merchants often bear higher fees and need POS machines. With UPI QR codes already everywhere \u2014 over <strong>50 million merchants<\/strong> accept UPI \u2014 RuPay credit cards instantly plug into that ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has major implications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Small merchants are more willing to accept credit spends.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Users get to use credit just like UPI \u2014 no swipe machines required.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RuPay naturally grows where traditional card networks often struggled.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rapid Market Share Gains<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These factors together are not just theoretical \u2014 they show up clearly in market numbers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>RuPay\u2019s share of India\u2019s <strong>credit card market climbed to about 16-18%<\/strong> in late 2025 \u2014 a significant rise from just a few percentage points a couple of years ago.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In just two years, RuPay credit card usage went from around <strong>3% to roughly 16%<\/strong> of total credit card transactions.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This rapid climb reflects a structural shift.
