Why your UPI Credit Card<\/a><\/strong> sometimes won\u2019t go through at a merchant QR\u2014and how to resolve it quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, a quick refresher<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Kiwi<\/a>, you get a RuPay Credit Card<\/a><\/strong> that you can link to UPI in the Kiwi app<\/strong> and use to scan standard UPI QRs and pay via credit\u2014no POS machine needed. Acceptance is wide, but a few realities can block a transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common reasons it doesn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. Merchant has disabled credit-on-UPI<\/strong> on their QR
    Some shops or payment providers turn off RuPay credit acceptance on their UPI QR. In that case, your app won\u2019t show the credit option.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. UPI app routing to the wrong account<\/strong>
    <\/strong> If savings account is set as default, your attempt may not surface the credit option. You may need to switch the payment source within the app.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Card not linked or KYC incomplete<\/strong>
    <\/strong> The RuPay Credit Card<\/strong> must be properly linked to your UPI handle. Incomplete KYC or an outdated app version can block it.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Issuer\/network declines or velocity limits<\/strong>
    <\/strong> Risk checks, temporary blocks, unusual spend patterns, per-transaction\/ daily caps, or insufficient available limit can cause declines.

  5. Category restrictions or MCC policies<\/strong>
    <\/strong>Some merchant categories (e.g., certain government or specialized services) may not be enabled for credit via UPI by the acquiring setup.

    <\/strong> Faded\/damaged QRs or spotty data can cause timeouts. Dynamic QRs that refresh quickly may also fail if scanned late.

    <\/strong> Entering the wrong credit-linked UPI PIN (different from your bank-account UPI PIN) will fail.

    Quick fixes to try in order<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    1. Check the payment source:<\/strong> In your UPI app\u2019s pay screen, explicitly choose the UPI Credit Card<\/strong> (RuPay) instead of the bank account.
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Re-link in Kiwi:<\/strong> Open the Kiwi app, confirm your RuPay Credit Card via Kiwi<\/strong> is active and linked to your UPI handle; complete\/refresh KYC if prompted.
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Try a small test amount:<\/strong> If velocity\/limits are in play, a lower amount may pass.
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Try another merchant QR:<\/strong> This helps confirm if the issue is merchant-side (credit acceptance disabled).
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Update apps:<\/strong> Ensure both Kiwi and your UPI app are on the latest version.
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Check available limit and recent declines:<\/strong> Clear any outstanding bill and reattempt.
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Network sanity check:<\/strong> Move to a better signal or re-scan a clearer\/dynamic QR.
      <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    8. Wait and retry:<\/strong> Temporary issuer\/PSP routing issues do occur and usually clear quickly.
      <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      About rewards while you troubleshoot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Even when the payment succeeds, note that cashback applies only on eligible everyday offline UPI spends<\/strong>. Exclusions include utilities, government payments\/taxes, fuel, jewelry, transport tolls\/fees, and certain professional\/business services. Fuel doesn\u2019t earn cashback, though the 1% fuel surcharge waiver<\/strong> applies on eligible amounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When to switch the payment rail<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      If credit isn\u2019t available on a particular QR (merchant-side setting), pay from your bank account for that transaction and continue using the UPI Credit Card<\/strong> elsewhere. Acceptance is broad across kirana, chemists, salons, caf\u00e9s, local provision and dairy stores, and many large chains that display a UPI QR at checkout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1) Does every QR accept a UPI with credit card?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> No. Most standard UPI QRs do, but some merchants or acquirers turn off credit-on-UPI<\/strong>. Government counters, utilities, tolls, and certain specialized services often don\u2019t allow credit via UPI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      2) How do I switch the payment source to my UPI Credit Card inside the UPI app?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> On the pay screen, tap the account\/source selector and choose the RuPay Credit Card<\/strong> instead of your bank account. Many failures are just routing to the wrong source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      3) What\u2019s the difference between static and dynamic QRs\u2014does it affect acceptance?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> Static QRs (printed\/sticker) generally work the same as dynamic QRs (generated on a device). Failures on dynamic QRs can also happen if you scan too late and the code expires\u2014ask the merchant to refresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      4) My transaction was declined even after selecting the credit option. Why?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> Common reasons: insufficient available limit, issuer\/network risk checks, per-transaction or daily caps, unusually high amount, or temporary outages. Try a smaller test amount and check your available limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      5) Do UPI Credit Cards have different PINs?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> Yes, the credit-linked UPI PIN<\/strong> can be different from your bank-account UPI PIN. A wrong PIN or too many attempts will fail the payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      6) Are there transaction limits for UPI Credit Cards?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> Yes\u2014limits can exist at the issuer, network, or UPI app level (per transaction and per day). Very high bills may hit these caps. Splitting a purchase or using another rail may help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      7) The merchant says \u201ccard not accepted,\u201d but there\u2019s a QR on the desk. What gives?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> They likely disabled credit-on-UPI<\/strong> for that QR. You can still pay via bank account on the same QR, but the credit option won\u2019t appear for that merchant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      8) Could poor network or a damaged QR cause failures?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> Yes. Weak data, smudged\/faded codes, glare, or torn stickers can cause timeouts or misreads. Move to better signal, clean the camera, or re-scan a clearer\/dynamic QR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      9) A payment shows \u201cprocessing\u201d or \u201cpending.\u201d Will I be charged?<\/strong>
      <\/strong> Most timeouts auto-reverse. Check your UPI app and card ledger (Kiwi\/issuer app). If it posts and later reverses, you\u2019ll see a credit entry. Keep the transaction reference for follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      10) How do I confirm whether a payment used my card or my bank account?<\/strong>
