Link Mobile Number with Voter ID

Let’s walk through how to link mobile number with voter ID if we’re registered voters in India. We can request a mobile number update through Form 8 on the Election Commission of India’s voter services portal. We can also submit the form through our local election office.

The key is to update our voter record, not just create a portal account. Below, we explain what to keep ready, how to submit the request and what to do if we get stuck.

What are We Updating, and Why Does it Help?

Our voter ID is also called an Electors Photo Identity Card, or EPIC. Its number helps identify our voter record. When we link a mobile number with voter ID, we add or correct the contact number associated with that record.

An active number is useful when a voter service requires a one-time password, or OTP. For example, downloading an e-EPIC involves verification through the registered mobile number. Keeping a number we can access makes these checks easier to complete.

We should keep two separate actions in mind:

  • Creating a portal account gives us a way to sign in and use online services.
  • Submitting a correction request asks election officials to update our voter details.

A successful login does not, by itself, confirm that our mobile number has changed in the electoral record.

What Should We Keep Ready?

Before we begin, we can gather:

  • Our EPIC number and voter details as recorded in the electoral roll.
  • The active mobile number we want to add or update.
  • Access to that phone for any OTP verification requested.
  • Our constituency details, if needed to identify the correct record.
  • Supporting documents required by the form or election office for the correction.

We should check the instructions shown for our request before uploading anything. Form 8 includes different services, so an address change or photograph correction may require different evidence from a contact-number update.

We should not assume that OTP verification replaces every document requirement. If the portal asks for proof and the requirement is unclear, we can check with our Booth Level Officer, or BLO, before submitting.

How Do We Submit the Request Online?

We can follow this sequence on the ECI voter services portal. Labels may change, so we should use the current correction instructions displayed there.

1. Open the Official Voter Services Portal

We start from the Election Commission of India’s official website and open its voter services section. This helps us avoid mistaking an advertisement or third-party assistance page for the official service.

We sign in, or create an account if needed, and complete the verification requested on screen.

2. Open Form 8 for Corrections

We choose Form 8 and the option for correcting entries in the existing electoral roll. We are updating an existing voter record, so we should not start a fresh voter registration application for this task.

3. Identify Our Voter Record

We enter our EPIC number or follow the prompts to locate our details. Before continuing, we check that the name and constituency shown belong to us.

If the wrong record appears, we stop and check the details we entered. A similar name is not enough to confirm a match.

4. Select the Mobile Number Correction

We select the mobile number field and enter the number we want recorded. We check every digit and complete any OTP verification the portal requests.

If we are only changing our phone number, we keep the request focused on that correction. We should not select unrelated changes simply to move to the next screen.

5. Review and Submit

We follow the supporting-document instructions, read the declaration and review the completed form. We then submit the request and save its reference number or acknowledgement.

We can take a screenshot of the confirmation for our records. The reference number will help us follow up without having to reconstruct the application details later.

How Do We Apply Offline?

If the online route is difficult, we can contact our BLO or Electoral Registration Officer, known as the ERO. We ask for Form 8 and explain that we want to add or correct our mobile number.

On the form, we select the correction option, identify the mobile number as the detail to change and enter the correct particulars. We complete the relevant fields and declaration, and attach the supporting proof requested for our application.

Before handing it over, we can ask the officer to clarify any field we do not understand. We should keep a copy of what we submit and request an acknowledgement for follow-up.

This route is also useful when we cannot complete an online verification step. We should explain the access problem rather than guess at information or use someone else’s voter details.

How Do We Track the Update?

After submission, we use the portal’s application-status service and enter our reference number, along with any other requested details. We check whether the application is pending, needs action or has been decided.

Submitting the form is different from having the correction approved. We should not assume the record changed as soon as we received an OTP or acknowledgement.

We also avoid relying on a fixed completion time. Instead, we follow the status shown for our application and any instructions from the election office. If we need help, we can contact our BLO or use the ECI voter helpline, 1950, with the appropriate STD code where required.

For an offline request, we keep the acknowledgement available when we contact the office. It gives the officer a clearer starting point than our name alone.

What Can We do When Something Goes Wrong?

We Do Not Receive the OTP

We check the number entered and confirm that the phone has a mobile signal. We wait for the resend option before trying again. If the problem continues, we can return later or ask the election office for help.

We No Longer Have our Old Number

We should not assume that access to the old SIM is the only way forward. If the online flow prevents us from continuing, we can explain the issue to our BLO or ERO and ask how to submit the correction offline.

Our Voter Details Do Not Match

We compare the EPIC number and other entries with our existing record. If the record itself needs correction, we identify the specific error instead of repeatedly trying different details.

The Website Fails After We Submit

We check for an acknowledgement and review our application history before starting again. This helps us avoid sending another request when the first one may already have been received.

Let’s Make Everyday QR Payments More Rewarding With Kiwi

Once we have dealt with our voter details, we can give another everyday task some attention: how we pay at shops.

At Kiwi, we help make UPI on credit useful for eligible merchant payments. With an eligible RuPay credit card linked on UPI, we can scan and pay for purchases such as groceries at supported merchant QRs. Eligible payments can earn rewards under the applicable card and offer terms.

We can start by checking how it works, where we can use it and which terms apply. Explore UPI on credit with Kiwi and see how our everyday QR payments could earn rewards.

FAQs
1. What Should We Check Before Polling Day?

We should check that our name appears in the electoral roll and that we meet the applicable identification requirements. A linked phone number is not a substitute for voter registration. Before polling day, we can verify our entry and check the official voting instructions.

2. Is this the Same as Linking Aadhaar with Voter ID?

No. We are requesting a contact-number correction. Providing Aadhaar information is a separate purpose. We should read the relevant fields carefully; Form 8 also includes an option for applicants who cannot furnish an Aadhaar number because they do not have one.

3. Can We Provide a Family Member’s Mobile Number?

Form 8 includes a field for a father’s, mother’s or another relative’s mobile number. We should follow the form’s instructions and consider whether we can reliably access any verification messages sent to that number.

4. Can We Correct Another Detail in the Same Form?

Form 8 allows correction of up to four entries. If we also need to correct a name or another listed detail, we should select the relevant fields and provide supporting evidence for those changes.

5. Does Submitting Form 8 Immediately Give us an e-EPIC?

No. Form 8 is a correction request. We use the separate e-EPIC download service when we want a digital copy of our voter ID.

6. Should We Share Our OTP With Someone Helping Us?

We should keep the OTP private and enter it ourselves on the official service. If we need help filling the form, we can ask someone to explain the steps without giving them our password or verification code.
